I still remember my first wrestling practice. I remember walking in and not quite knowing what to expect. A few years ago I remembered going to my cousin's wrestling matches at the state finals. These were held in basketball gyms where many mats were set up one next to the other. Bleachers were brought in on either side of these wrestling areas. I remember looking on in awe as 280 pound giants lumbered past each other until in a flash of movement one of them hit the mat. And then as lighter much nimbler 106 pounders darted and dodged back and forth. The lighter the wrestlers were the more exciting the match was.
My cousin ended up placing fifth in the state finals his senior year in high school. Traditionally he had played baseball, but when he was cut from the team at SJP (Saint Johns Prep) he decided to try wrestling and he loved it. It was because of his experience that I thought I could turn into a wrestler from a hockey player. My cousin inspired me to try new new sport that now I am really loving. I can't wait to learn more next week and to continue wrestling for as long as I can. Although trying a new sport can be very challenging if often is worth giving it a try as it is with most things. So I encourage you to go out and try something new, this new year. You never know what you will find.
